Fishing the Cicadas Hatch Ever since fly fishing as a boy with his dad and brothers on the streams and mountain lakes of Idaho, Ken has been hooked. After studying music and oboe performance at Goshen College and Northwestern University, he returned to Idaho with a dream to combine his passions for music and fishing. He has been able to do this, spending thirty summers as a fly fishing guide on the South Fork of the Snake in Eastern Idaho, and four years on the Owyhee in Oregon, along with thirty-four years of performing with the Boise Philharmonic Orchestra. For over fifty years, whether the time in the Midwest, or back in Idaho raising a family, one constant has been his fly-tying bench. He is always fishing, studying the hatch; looking for innovative techniques and materials to replicate what he observes. Fly fishing and fly design have provided a way to satisfy this curiosity, to spend time outdoors, to stay connected with old friends, and to meet new people with similar passions. I am simply going to present tying my Burkada cicada pattern which has been effective on the South Fork Boise, Middle Fork Boise, and the Upper Green River out of Pinedale, Wyoming. Ken Burkeholder
