Idaho State Record Challenge
GOAL
Promote the sport of fly fishing in Idaho, and awareness of Boise Valley Fly Fishers in the public. Promote catch and release angling. Provide recognition to the angler achievement of a new Idaho state record catch.
RULES
- You must be a BVFF member in good standing.
- The fish must be caught from legally catchable populations.
- The fish must be caught on a single barbless fly, using fly fishing tackle.
- The fish must be photographed with minimal stress; that is, raised above the water, photographed, and then released unharmed, not photographed flopping on the bank. (Use the Keep'em Wet method. See www.KeepFishWet.org for principles and tips.)
- This award program is promoting Idaho Fish & Game Dept Catch & Release state record program.
- All fish must be caught and posted after the BVFF Challenge start date of 5/9/2019.

Note that a fish must exceed the current state record by 1/2" to qualify as a new record catch.
NOTE: ID F&G has both a State Record program and a Catch & Release Record program. BVFF promotes catch and release angling, and anglers are encouraged to participate in this particular challenge program.
ID Fish & Game Guidelines
For Convenience the guidelines ID F&G has for its Catch & Release Record program are listed here. Check the F&G website for updates and details. A submission form is available there as well.
- Fish must be released alive. See tips on safely releasing fish in the Fishing Rules booklet .
- Steelhead, ocean run salmon, Bull Trout and White Sturgeon submitted for records must be measured and photographed in the water.
- Catch-and-Release Records are based only on the total length from snout to tip of tail. Measure the total length from the tip of the snout to the end of the tail, with lobes of tail squeezed together.
- Fish must be photographed directly next to a ruler/tape or an object of known verifiable length (such as the fishing rules booklet).
- At least one photo of the angler with the fish.
- At least one witness to the measurement and release.
- White Sturgeon records must be broken by a minimum of 2 inches.
- Records for all other species must be broken by a minimum of ½ inch.
- All applications must be submitted within 30 days of the catch date.
