Spring Creek Flies & Furled Leaders (part 2)
Eric Austin will join us when he tied the first spring-creek type fly of the evening, a quill-wing No Hackle. It’s not an easy pattern to tie but Eric will take away much of the mystery in its construction.
The second fly is one we designed more than 25 years ago for the spring creeks in Montana’s Paradise Valley. When compared to the No Hackle, it’s much easier to tie. It’s called the ParaGlen; the parachute that’s not a parachute. It will also be featured in one of the chapters of a new book we are currently outlining.
Speaking of a new book: Our advancing years no longer allow us to go underwater to photograph things that live there. Is there anyone in the audience who is interested in helping us with the underwater photography for our next book? We’d love to hear from you.
Materials List
No Hackle
- Hook: Dry fly, size #8 to #22
- Thread: Color to match the body
- Tail: Hackle fibers, micro fibbets, guard hairs, etc.
- Wings: Duck quill slips
- Body: Dubbing, the color of choice
- Head: Thread
ParaGlen
- Hook: Dry fly, size #8 to #22
- Thread: Color to match the body
- Body: Furled poly yarn, the color of choice
- Wing: Poly yarn
- Hackle: Grizzly or brown, the color of choice
- Head: Thread
Leader Material:
- Spool of monofilament, 4- or 6-pound test.
- Power drill
- hook for the power drill, extra weight
- hook/clamp to anchor to the tabletop.
