October Outing to the Grande Ronde River in Oregon
The October Outing is to the Grande Ronde River in Northeast Oregon/Southeast Washington. We will be staying in Troy, Oregon, October 21th to the 23th, where they have a campground with RV hook-ups, hotel and café; there is a primitive campground a mile or so up river from Troy. If you are planning on staying in Troy be sure to reserve your campsite early, they fill up fast (www.troyresort.comor 541-828-7773). Oregon licenses and Columbia Basin Endorsement (required to fish for Steelhead in the Columbia Basin) can be obtained in Troy or Enterprise.
Last year we had several members that were successful using strike indicator techniques with large nymphs and egg patterns. Swinging flies on the Grande Ronde can also be successful and last year I saw several fisherman swinging flies and I talk to a couple of fisherman on the river who were successful swinging flies. I also observed several fishermen using their pontoon boat to drift down the river and to access the roadless side of the river.
Useful flies; purple peril, green butt skunks, black bunny leeches, size 6-8 nymphs like bead head prince nymph and peacock stone flies, and glo bug egg patterns. Consult the Joseph Fly Shop for up to date fishing reports and the best flies to use (josephflyshoppe.com or 541-432-4343).
Saturday evening I am planning pot luck and social for 6 pm at my campsite. I have reserved site #20 at the far end of the RV section. I will be coming off a pheasant hunting trip that Friday so I will bring some pheasant and a salmon filet from my Alaska Trip. Others can bring meat, sides, desserts, and your favorite adult beverage.
